This tour is aimed at the intermediate to experienced rider as due to the nature of the terrain there are days where we have to cover greater distances off road just to reach our overnight stops, often without the option for a direct shortcut. Your baggage is transported by the support vehicle to that night’s hotel, ready for your arrival each evening, so after checking in, a welcome beer and a recap of the days highlights are in order. We generally then all meet up for more bike talk over a great meal and a bottle of local wine, all of which is included in the tour price. See route map above for detail images. We offer the option (flight time dependent) to start this tour within an hour of landing at Almeria airport or after a night visiting the cities tapas bars, which we are happy to guide you on also. Either way our support vehicle will be at the airport to collect you, we start the route within sight of the beach as this is an ideal way to get the day off to an easy rhythm You will be given your riding gear, and any adjustments made to the bike set up to meet your requirements.

  Day 1 Depart Almeria (Altitude range 3m – 1956m)
PC Most people are keen to get started, but anxious about how they will get on. We leave Almeria and head North towards the sierras and our first refuel and onto a well deserved lunch break. Our terrain changes from the low lying dry river bed which winds it’s way inland to farm tracks which give way to forest and mountain trails. By this time we are high up in the mountains and as any skier or hill walker can confirm mountain weather can change rapidly, so after a refreshment and photo stop we plough on through some of the easier trails, keep one eye out for Imperial eagles and the other on the spectacular drop!

A short tarmac link sees us back on piste for the rest of the afternoon; we then stop for option of a coffee break if we are making good time. The remainder of the afternoon we village hop, before getting onto the trail which takes us to our first hotel of the tour where we will spend the night.
  Day 3 Cazorla valley (Altitude range 364m – 1043m)
Because we are returning to Quesada in the evening there is no need to pack up today, this also means our route can be attempted in either direction either way we will be initially starting on gentle wide trails through the valley then as the trail begin to narrow they begin to ascending through picturesque olive groves which skirt the park boundary, the trail peaks at over 1000m before heading towards our lunch stop and replenish our water supplies, this section is one of the most remote areas we encounter a true wilderness. After the break and taking on more fuel at Villanueva del Arzobispo, we’re back on the route as we have lots more ground to cover as we like to stop for coffee in the town of Cazorla, Cazorla itself is a tourist town that is known as the gateway to the park. Once our coffee break is over we have a short run through the valley back to our hotel, where bikes are prepped for tomorrow and bodies prepped for the tapas tour!
Day 5 Guadix to Almeria (Altitude range 124m – 1903m)
Our last riding day and we start with the usual briefing of what to expect throughout the day. Once we’ve left the town’s access tracks behind we skirt the sierras traversing the foothills and using the channel cut by the river Nacimiento on its journey to the sea. Today’s route is downhill towards Almeria but in no way is it any easier than the previous few days, the change in terrain becoming noticeable as we progress towards the city, it becoming more desert like. We are now in the area that was used in the production of the spaghetti westerns made famous by Clint Eastwood, the movie set can be seen from the main Almeria to Tabernas road. We arrive back at the hotel late in the afternoon and debrief over a beer, once again your equipment has been delivered by the support crew and it’s just a matter of handing back your riding gear before jumping in a hot shower, before a final night on the town, only this time over indulgence can be tolerated as there’s no riding the following day!
Day 2 Baza to Quesada (Altitude range 446m – 1130m)
An early start today as today is a long day, after breakfast we fuel the bikes to the brim and exit the town down gentle trail which act as a warm up for our first piste of the day, across the relatively flat landscape to the start of the ???? Gorge. We climb 500 metres as we head up the gorge on easy going trails, before heading off on a panoramic piste that will lead us over the Tiscar for a rendevouz with the support crew as there are no fuel stations today, a casual alfresco lunch is taken before heading down the gorge itself stopping on the way for photo stops. Heading northwards with views of stunning rock formations on the parks periphery we level out while skirting Huesa, now in the olive groves we finish off with some tight trails before entering the village of Quesada where we check in at the hotel for our first of two nights there. The hotel is a typical family run affair, the owners are extremely friendly and the bar staff are keen to talk bikes, we normally have one evening meal at the hotel and the other we walk to one of the bars near the village square, where we sample a variety of tapas.
Day 4 Quesada to Guadix (Altitude range 215m – 1129m)
We have various options available at the beginning of the day as we are spoilt be the amount of ride able trails on our doorstep but we have probably agreed what our plan of action is over a few beers last night. For the keen, another full day of demanding trails awaits, we can take the direct route across the Plato or we can meander in and out of the valley. Whatever is decided we can change this enroute, in fact today using the sierra Nevada peaks as a heading you can take the lead and set the pace yourself, with your guide there only for confirmation if required. Today is a kick back day, as the direct route will get you to your hotel a bit earlier than normal, however if you want to stay out as long as possible, we’ll run until the tanks are dry! The restaurant stays open until late in our hotel so the choice is yours.
